Here’s news on our UPnP streaming music controller. Just this week we released all new versions of tagNplay for the iPhone/iPod and the iPad and they are now ready for download from the iTunes app store. These new versions have a lot of great new features and for anyone that’s already using the iPhone app, the iPad and new iPhone apps are a free upgrade.
We have also changed the name from tagNplay Controller to eLyric Controller. This helps consolidate and simplify the naming of our services and software. There’s now eLyric Server and eLyric Controller. Together, they form a wonderful system that allows you to stream music over the network to any UPnP compatible player, like the PS Audio Bridge.
Both eLyric Server and eLyric Controller support the new Linn Davaar multi-room setup as well as PS Audio’s PerfectWave DAC and Bridge combination and the Olive music server too.
Cover art, support for folders, a new device selecting menu and a separate tab to control the PWD for the iPhone app and of course, the entire iPad app is completely new.
Check out the screenshot from the iPhone eLyric Controller app. Every track, album cover and folder has a small thumbnail for the cover art. This makes the selection process a lot more intuitive and fun. Next, we eliminated the scroll wheel for device selection and used a more traditional list approach that is light years easier to us.
We’ve also written code to wait much longer for the server or the player to “wake up” after you’ve put it to sleep. This really helps with the frustrating trend of the older tagNplay app to revert back to the internal player and library when it lost connection. This is a lot more seamless to use and enjoy.
We’ve designed a completely new and ultra clean interface that is simple and fun to use. Everything’s available right from the main screen, or choose the playing now screen for larger cover art and the artist’s bio. Full control of the volume, play/pause/forward/reverse and scrub are available from this cool playing now screen.
You can add playlists (if your server supports it) and folders and they will appear in the left side index. Unlike the smaller iPhone app, you don’t have to return to the main menu to switch between category sorting. So you can go from Artists, to Albums, to Genre and never leave the main screen.
Check out the ultra clean playing now screen on the iPad app. This is really attractive and our beta testers have had nothing but praise for it. With the big, beautiful iPad screen, cover art of decent resolution looks great and the artist info will appear just to the right of the cover art as you can see in the screenshot.
If you have already purchased the original tagNplay iPhone/iPod app and wish to either upgrade your app to get the new features, like cover art scrolling, or if you wish to also download the new iPad eLyric app, it’s ready right now. You can go here to download http://itunes.apple.com/app/ps-audios-elyric/id384182119?mt=8 or simply upgrade your existing app on your mobile device.
If you haven’t yet downloaded the eLyric iPhone or iPad app and have a compatible UPnP player/server combination like the PS Audio PerfectWave series, Linn or Olive, then this is a great time to pop for the $9.95 app (you get both for the same price).
We’re doing our best to get the high-end connected.

How come the app does not show up when I go to the app store? When I start TagNPlay it says the version is 1.2.1.0 – also when I search for eLyric app I can not find it.

Give it a few days, it just posted and Apple’s being slow. Sorry.
Staff
It is available now.

Will the elyric controller be able to remote control iTunes
Staff
No, unfortunately it will not control iTunes.

Hi,
Does this app support gapless playback? I was under the impression that upnp was not
capable of supporting gapless, but I thought I’d doublecheck with you all.
This is a showstopper for me. In addition to live concerts, hearing the 2nd side
of Abbey Road with gaps between songs doesn’t cut it.
Thanks

The support of gapless over UPnP is supported (in general) and is not related to the app. Having said that, the PS Audio Bridge and PerfectWave products do not support gapless yet, but should this year. I believe the Linn products already support gapless, are UPnP and supported by the PS app in question.

Just bought it for my Linn DS system, but no way to switch from Playlist to SHOUTcast Internet radio ??
marty
Thanks for the quick response. I understand this is not related to the app but to upnp.
I’m glad to hear you will be supporting gapless playback in the future.

You bet. Classical music sucks with gaps as does Abbey Road! We’re on it.

I was excited for the bridge, but after playing with eLyric, I’ve lost interest. For me, iTunes is a better interface. Plus, I have to use iTunes for sycning my phone and for playback when I at the computer. So a second program does not make sense for me. If you supported AirPlay, I’d be interested.

Why only apps for Apple and not apps for Android?
Thanks for the answer.

We’re not avoiding Android but we have to place our bets on one horse right now because of limited resources. Over time we’ll also do Android. Our free server program is available for both MAC and PC.

I have a key missing feature request for iPad/iPhone app: Search. Browsing the server lists is a cumbersome way to select music – especially with a large collection. A simple Search box with functionality similar to J River’s Media Center’s would be a GREAT addiion to the eLyric Controller.
Looking forward to gapless support as well. A standard feature these days.
Also would be great if you could properly deal with compilation albums such that they are grouped by Album if an album contains multiple artist names, rather than considering each artist/album as a separate entity- big pain. All other players deal with this properly- w J River doing it the best. Thanks for listening.

Search is there if your server supports it. For example, if you use eLyric server, search is available – I believe J River does support it as well.
You can also group by album/artist to help with the second issue, but this is server based as well so depends on which server you’re using.
I agree that we have to work harder and do better on making this easy and appreciate the comments.
