In the July issue of the Absolute Sound Magazine, editor Robert Harley writes a very informative article entitled What exactly are CD-quality and high resolution audio? It’s an article worth reading and one that I learned a great deal from.
In the article Robert writes about the process digital audio went through, the adulteration of many analog masters and why a well done CD can often times sound better than a “high resolution” version of the same. It’s an article worth reading.
Thanks to Robert for furthering our understanding.

If we mentally step back from focusing on just the reproduction chain (your stereo system) and look at the entire process of capturing and playing back the sound of live musicians playing in a room, we can see it as […]
If the high-end designer really wants thunderous bass response in his equipment, a servo is perhaps the very best way to go. You’ve probably heard of servo bass before but servo controlling the low end response of an amplifier is […]
Yesterday I explained the real problem in using a direct coupled product like a power amp or preamp is not the DC they produce, which is minimal at best, but how these products handle DC from OTHER products. If the […]

It was a very good article – as usual from Mr. Harley.
I also appreciate that the music review section in TAS now includes reviews of hi-rez downloads which compare the sound quality to that of the CD releases. I am happy to pay extra for the better format, but only if it delivers superior sound.

Agreed!
Now, if only there were a way to get the bits from my SACDs into my Mac Mini….

Is this REALLY any different than when SONY / Philips pushed CD on the world (beginning as early as 1981)?
Many people went out and replaced their entire LP music collections with CDs, on the assumption that they would automatically sound BETTER!
Better (sounding CDs), as it turned out, are still trying to catch up with that enigmatic and seductive LP sound; so it seems

Read the article as well. Thought is was very well done. It was good timing for me since I am just jumping into the world of flac music files.

I also thought this article was superb. (I’m sure I learned far more than Paul did.) This should be required reading for anyone before they launch into vinyl vs. digital debates. Even us digital zealots can agree that most CDs made before the mid-90s were crap. Harley explains beautifully why that’s true — and why that is not an indictment of digital .

I live in Munich, Germany but work currently in Shenyang, China.
No way the get a paper copy of the magazine or the article.
